Modeling Radial Oscillations of the Sun

This student research project develops a discrete one-dimensional model of the Sun's radial oscillations: a radial sector of the star is divided into blocks, and the gas pressure between adjacent blocks is represented by nonlinear “gas springs.” The frequencies and shapes of free oscillations are obtained as eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a matrix problem. For the lowest-frequency mode, a period of approximately 4.3 · 10³ s is obtained; the largest displacements in this mode occur in the outer layers of the model. The results of the modal analysis are additionally verified by direct integration of the equations of motion using the Leapfrog method.
